  • Despite suffering from numerous injuries, including 35 broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a punctured liver, Renner survived New Year’s Day incident

Newly released footage shows the moments after Jeremy Renner was left critically injured when his 14,330-pound snow plow ran him over on January 1.

The harrowing video captured by police body cam shows the actor lying on the ground surrounded by a team of medics racing to save his life.

On a sunny day in the mountains near Lake Tahoe, Nevada a surreal scene played out as rescuers desperately work to save Renner – who can be seen lying next to a huge pool of blood.

The footage captures the tense moments of the rescue operation and shows first responders working swiftly to stabilize Renner, who sustained numerous injuries, including 35 broken bones, a collapsed lung and a punctured liver among others.

Incredibly, Renner managed to survive the incident which happened on New Year’s Day while out clearing the snow on his driveway with his nephew.

The Hollywood leading man shared a photo showing his bruised face, to go along with the more than 30 broken bones he suffered, a few days after the accident: ‘Thank you all for your kind words. I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all’

The footage sees first responders working to stabilize him before airlifting him to hospital with a chopper having landed close by.

The video also shows Renner’s nephew recounting the harrowing experience and describing how the actor had heroically exited the snowplow cab to check on him.

‘That’s when it was coming at me full force. He tried to jump on it… and it took him under. Right where the blood is at is right where it happened,’ Alexander Fries recounted.

When the plow began rolling towards him, Renner then attempted to climb back into the cab and stop it from hitting his nephew but he was unable to prevent the accident after slipping under the metal tread of the snowplow.

‘It was horrible. I thought he was going to die, man. I’m holding him and his color is just going,’ he said.

Officers on the scene can be heard expressing their shock and admiration after hearing about Renner’s actions.

One officer can be heard saying, ‘A number of broken ribs, laceration to the head, apparently one side of his face swelled up immediately, like softball size,’ he also describes the actor as ‘conscious, alert, breathing.’

With snow piled head-high along the icy road and blood on the ground, the newly released bodycam footage provides a real insight into the stressful and tense minutes after authorities arrived on the scene.

According to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office incident report Renner towed his nephew, Alexander Fries’ vehicle after it became stuck in the snow.

The snow plow suddenly began to move and Renner attempted to prevent his nephew from being hurt.

The snowcat, a PistenBully snow groomer, started ‘sliding sideways’ and then ‘began to roll down the hill.’

‘Once he was off the PistenBully, he realized it was heading directly toward (his nephew),’ the report read.

‘He feared the PistenBully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the PistenBully.’

Renner attempted to access the snow groomer’s cab by climbing onto the moving track, but was ‘immediately pulled under the left side track.’

The emergency services were quickly on the scene despite the remote location

Police officers could be heard expressing their amazement that Renner was even still alive

In a 911 call placed by Renner’s neighbor to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Renner could be heard moaning in agony.

After being airlifted to hospital he underwent chest surgery.

The 52-year-old Hawkeye star revealed his injury included ’35 or so’ broken bones.

‘We kept discovering them as we were going along. It went from critical order, like, priority of what I’m going to die from or not,’ Renner said. ‘And then six weeks later, I’m finding another break and another break and another break.’

‘It just missed every vertebra, didn’t hit any organs, didn’t hit my brain, didn’t swell, nothing like that. My eye did pop out, that’s weird,’ Renner explained. ‘But I got pretty lucky that none of my organs got messed up. It pierced my liver but that wasn’t dangerous.’

In recent weeks, Renner has credited his remarkable survival and subsequent recovery with the swift action of the first responders.

Despite the severity of his injuries he is now able to walk again and last week Renner made his return to the red carpet for the premiere of his new Disney+ show ‘Rennervations,’ just over three months after he was crushed.

Last week, the Avengers made his first red carpet appearance since his near-death accident for his documentary mini-series Rennervations, which he shared with his  daughter, Ava, 10

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier last week, Renner and Kimmel joked about him being ‘indestructible’ and the host calling him the ‘toughest Avenger’

The Modesto, California native laughed as he shared about his experience in the ICU just after the accident, comparing to a ‘haunted house’

The Avengers star has been sharing updates on his condition and rehabilitation via social media, including a January 21 post showing him in physical therapy for his legs.

‘Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love,’ began the star.

‘I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend , grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens . Love and blessings to you all.’

Fast Forward nearly three months, and Renner looks to be in great shape in comparison to the initial images of him in hospital all bruised and bandaged up.

But Renner still has a long road to recovery ahead of him which could potentially last for years – that will consist of extensive physical therapy.

Renner said he continued to take into account the feelings of his loved ones amid his critical health ordeal: ‘It’s pretty harrowing to take the time to really consider somebody else’s perspective,’ Renner said.

The actor posted another photo on Instagram showing him standing, with the help of a cane, alongside a surgeon that he captioned:, ‘Thank you,’ along with a hand prayer emoji

Renner also went outside and posed outside in front of the medical center’s sign with four other staff members

The star said that in the wake of the accident, he was on the ground for about 45 minutes, and remembers ‘all of it’ up until he was transported to a nearby hospital.

‘Once I got into the helicopter to [go] the hospital, that’s when they jammed some sort of emergency knife or whatever they do in your chest – I don’t know, that’s when I was like, I got to go to sleep,’ he said.

Renner said he personally knew the local firefighters who were first responders in the incident, and overheard them saying they did the best they could, presuming the accident would be fatal.

‘Yes, some people thought I was dead and was going to die,’ he said. ‘I’m like, “No, man. I’m trying to get out of the hospital as soon as I was in it.” I’m like, “I’m out of here.”‘

Renner had his chest crushed and his upper torso had collapsed when he was pulled under a seven-ton snowplow at his Lake Tahoe property just hours after the new year rang in

Alexander Fries, who was by his uncle’s side, remembers telling him to breathe and was with him through his recovery too

The Hurt Locker actor has been giving updates on his condition, including a photo of his rehabilitation in bed that was posted on Instagram January 21, three weeks after the accident

Renner said he refuses to be victimized by the situation and is focused on recovery

Earlier this month, during an interview with Diane Sawyer, an animation was created that shows how Renner was dragged beneath the snow cat.

Renner said he and his nephew, Alex Fries, were trying to clear the road outside the house so the family could go skiing.

Fries was trying to maneuver a pickup truck, and Renner helped with the snow plow. They got the pickup unstuck, and Renner was moving the snow plow out of the way when it began skidding.

He could not see Fries, and was concerned his nephew was about to get hit by the seven-ton plow.

Renner lent out the cab, which he told Sawyer was ‘kind of like driving a car with your foot outside the car.’ He added: ‘It was my mistake.’

The actor fell, and then tried to get back in the cab while the tire tracks were still moving, but was pulled under them.

‘That’s when I screamed, when I went under the thing – ‘not today, motherf*****,” he said. Sawyer asked if he remembered the pain.

‘Oh, all of it. I was awake for all of it,’ said Renner. ‘I was on asphalt and ice. It feels like you imagine it. I could see my eye from my other eye. I was seeing stars.’

Fries and Renner before the accident

Blood soaked snow lays bare the horrific accident that took place near Renner’s Lake Tahoe, Nevada home

Fries saw what happened, and ran frantically to get help. ‘When I ran up to him, I didn’t think he was alive.

‘It’s pretty terrifying to see the person that you look up to so much like that. Then his head kind of turned, and this breath came out of it.’

He came across Renner’s neighbors, who rushed to their aide – desperately trying to stop the actor, who they did not recognize, from passing out and succumbing to his injuries

His doctors said his recovery was due to being young and healthy, plus having strong drive. They said it helped he was ‘down to earth, with a super support structure.’

Renner said he would do the same again, because the alternative was having the snow plow crush his nephew. ‘I refuse to be f****** haunted by that memory,’ he said.

In his first interview since the accident, he revealed he signed ‘I’m sorry’ to his family who sat by his side as the Avengers star recovered.

‘What does my body look like? Am I just going to be like a spine and a brain like a science experiment? Is that my existence now? What is my existence going to be like?’ he thought.

Renner told Sawyer of his moments in hospital when he couldn’t even speak to his family.

‘I was signing that I’m sorry, cause I am sorry,’ he said before speaking of how his mother never left his side.

‘She’s reading Stephen King, some horror thing. But she reads it like she’s reading Dr. Seuss to me,’ he said.

His mother, Valerie Cearley, added: ‘I just wanted him to hear my voice.’

Cearley broke down when she recounted the moment that she heard of her son’s accident and said ‘his breathing was so horrible.’

Pictures from the scene showed a pool of blood where Renner had been crushed.

His neighbor, Rich Kovach, remembered the moment he made the harrowing 911 call that would ultimately save his life.

‘The sounds that were coming out of him, there was so much blood in the snow,’ he said.

‘When I looked at his head, it appeared to me to be cracked wide open, and I could see white, I don’t know if that was his skull, maybe it was just my imagination, but that’s what I thought I saw.’

Pictures from the scene showed a pool of blood where Renner had been crushed, his neighbor, Rich Kovach, remembering the moment he made the harrowing 911 call that would ultimately save his life. His partner Barb also recounted her memories

Renner had been using a Snowcat plow to try to help his adult nephew, Alexander Fries, pull his car out of deep snow when he jumped out, forgetting to put on the emergency brake

His partner, Barb Fletcher, said she didn’t know who it was but can remember ‘a lot of blood coming from his head.’

‘I grabbed one of the towels that was still folded and just applied pressure. I could tell he was really struggling to breathe,’ she said.

Fries, who was by his uncle’s side, remembers telling him to breathe.

‘Just breathe, just breathe. That’s it. I stood over him in this crouched position holding his arm for the entire time, from seconds after that guy came over,’ he said.

‘It was just that. I was locked in on him.’ Renner said he refuses to be victimized by the situation.

‘So I shift the narrative of being victimized, or making a mistake, or anything else,’ he said.

‘I refuse to be haunted by that memory, that way that’s what I talk to my family about, all their perspectives, which are horrifying.

‘We just endured, that’s real love. Suffering, but that feeds the seeds of what love is.’

Renners ribcage has been completely rebuilt using metal which will stay in his body for the rest of his life.

Meanwhile there are metal plates in his face, rods in his legs, bands and screws in his jaw and screws in his skull.

His sister Kim told Sawyer that her brother was in so much pain he was ‘delirious’, and crying because he was unable to sleep. ‘We just endured,’ said Renner.

‘That’s real love. Suffering, but that feeds the seeds of what love is.’ Asked what he sees when he looks in the mirror, Renner replied: ‘I see a lucky man.’
