A British man is believed to have drowned off the coast of Spain at a resort in Costa Brava.

The 62-year-old was found lifeless in the water following a search by emergency crew.

A woman reportedly raised the alarm at around 1pm today after the man failed to return from a swim at a beach in the resort of Calella de Palafrugell in the north-east province of Girona, close to Spain’s border with France.

He had gone to swim at at Sant Roc cove, a residential area of the town surrounded by a beautiful setting of rocks, cliffs and old fishermen’s cottages.

Police sources said an autopsy is yet to take place but early indications were pointing to him drowning in a tragic accident.

An investigation, which is being coordinated by a local investigating judge, was ongoing today.

It was not immediately clear whether the woman who raised the alarm was the man’s partner or if they lived in the area or were on holiday.

The latest drowning tragedy involving a British national occurred just more than a week after a British man died in Tenerife in front of his son.

The unnamed 58-year-old was pulled out of the sea by two people, one of whom is believed to be a nurse who performed CPR on him after he went into cardiac arrest.

The emergency responders continued to try to revive him after reaching the scene, near the Punta de Teno lighthouse at the northwestern tip of Tenerife, but there was nothing they could do to save him.

The alarm was raised around at 5pm on Friday April 21.

A second person described as a minor who was with him at the time, was assisted by psychologists. Well-placed sources later confirmed the youngster, whose age is not known, was the dead man’s son.

Calella de Palafrugell is well-known for its rocky coves, sandy beaches and impressive fish restaurants.

There are several golf courses nearby and the famous Cap Roig music festival is held in a botanical garden close to the town.
