Chocolate-loving grandmother gets buried in M&M's themed casket

Life is a box of M&M’s! Chocolate-loving grandmother gets buried in M&M’s themed casket that she designed and kept in her house for YEARS – family members come to funeral dressed as the colorful chocolate treat

  • Mary Ester Stocks Martin Gailey’s dying wish was to be buried in a M&M’s casket
  • Gailey designed the casket with the help of her son to match her obsession
  • She was given the nickname ‘M&M’ by her students of 30 years

A chocolate-loving grandmother was buried in an M&M’s themed casket that she designed and built as family members said goodbye while dressed as the sweet treat.

Mary Ester Stocks Martin Gailey built the themed casket alongside her son to commemorate her 30 years as a language arts teacher and the nickname her students gave to her to match her initials ‘MM’.

Gailey’s classroom was filled with M&M’s themed trinkets from gifts she received from students. Her family honored her obsession and wore M&M’s attire to her burial held in Arizona on Saturday.

‘Her only regret was that she wasn’t going to be able to attend her own funeral to see people’s faces,’ Lisa Richardson, Gailey’s daughter-in-law, wrote on Facebook.

Gailey’s casket featured a massive blue M&M in the center holding several smaller candies imprinted with the names of her children: Steven Douglas Martin, William Gary Martin, Cindy Elaine Roundtree, and Thomas Dan Martin.

‘M&M’s were her theme. she was a teacher for 30 years and her initials were MM so her student gave her M&M’s memorabilia until she had an entire room full of it,’ Richardson wrote.

Bill Martin, told Esquire Middle East, the former teacher designed it in honor of her students.

‘The casket is a tribute to the over 5,000 students she taught throughout her career,’ Martin said. ‘She will be missed.’

Gailey’s former students attended her funeral and recalled she was their ‘biggest supporter.’

‘She always, ALWAYS, believed in me, and I got to see her every week for the last several years, James Owen wrote. And in the most Mary thing ever, she requested to be buried in a giant M&M.’

Owen recalled his close relationship with Gailey through her ‘unfailing’ friendship with his mom. He remembered singing at her wedding to Hugh Gailey and her small gestures.

Gailey’s grandson Roundtree Scott shared photos of the burial captioned: ‘You were right [Grandma] we all loved your casket.’

Scott mourned the loss of Gailey earlier this month in a grieving post while sharing a few of his favorite memories.

‘You fought so hard. I miss you so much,’ Scott wrote on Facebook. ‘I’m gonna miss the popcorn, The Rice Krispies, and most of all those hugs.’

Gailey was also a swim teacher before she retired in 2000.
