Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix docuseries sees the couple compare themselves with Princess Diana – but others just don't see the similarity, claims a royal expert.

In the first episode of the six-part series, Harry is heard saying: “So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mum.

"She has the same compassion, she has the same empathy, she has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her."

He added: "I knew I had to do everything to protect my family, especially after what happened to my mum."

But experts have criticised the comparison, with US royal commentator Kinsey Schofield claiming swathes of people just don't see the likeness – including, experts claim, members of Diana's own family.

Kinsey told the Daily Star: "I don't know whether Harry really sees Diana in Meghan or if Harry and Meghan recognize how loved Diana is so they are desperate to plant that seed for the association.

"But there is a large group of people that disagree with the comparison. Including key members of Diana's immediate family according to [royal experts] Tom Bower and Tina Brown."

Fans were also left reeling by the comparisons, with one writing: "Dear Harry, Meghan Markle is NOT Princess Diana. Sincerely, the world."

But others disagreed, with one Twitter user countering: "The similarities between Princess Diana and Meghan Markle are so hard to ignore. The Royals belittling them, the courtiers sabotaging them, the jealousy, the media harassment, Diana wanting to move to the US.

"The only difference is that Meghan’s husband actually wants to protect her."

The documentary also caused a stir after featuring a clip of a now-infamous Diana Panorama interview after Prince William said it should "never be aired again".

The 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir caused a stir after a damning report into the programme found it had "fallen far short of what audiences have a right to expect."

William said of the programme: "It is my view that the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said. The interview was a major contribution to making my parents' relationship worse and has since hurt countless others.

"It brings indescribable sadness to know that the BBC's failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation that I remember from those final years with her.

"But what saddens me most, is that if the BBC had properly investigated the complaints and concerns first raised in 1995, my mother would have known that she had been deceived.

"She was failed not just by a rogue reporter, but by leaders at the BBC who looked the other way rather than asking the tough questions.

"It is my firm view that this Panorama programme holds no legitimacy and should never be aired again. It effectively established a false narrative which, for over a quarter of a century, has been commercialised by the BBC and others."

Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the documentary at this time.
