The Met Office had issued an overnight yellow warning covering the South of England, most of Northern Ireland, large parts of Wales, the East of England, Northants and Warwickshire. It was expected that drivers could face hazardous spray while lightning strikes and winds may well have damaged buildings.

Flooding of homes and businesses is possible and there might be rail disruption. Forecasters say some short-term loss of power is also a risk.

Today rain is expected to briefly clear northwards followed by sunny spells, said the Met Office.

But rain, hail and thunder is likely from tomorrow to Thursday.

The South-west and North-east will have the heaviest showers tomorrow but it’ll be warm and breezy for many.
