A woman who told hospital staff that she had stabbed her five-year-old daughter to death because she was 'evil' is being held in a Texas jail on murder charges.

Melissa Towne drove to the HCA Tomball Hospital on Sunday (October 16) afternoon with her daughter’s “lifeless” body in her car.

Towne, 37, went into the hospital and asked for a wheelchair because “her daughter’s body was hurting".

According to a police report, an emergency room nurse walked to Towne’s Jeep Cherokee, where she found the five-year-old “partially wrapped in plastic and mesh bags”.

A knife wound was clearly was visible on the child’s neck. She was pronounced dead just after noon on Sunday, October 16, deputies said.

Hospital staff immediately called the police and Towne told officers that she had killed her daughter at nearby Spring Creek Park and drove her to the hospital.

While Tomball Police Department initially responded to the call, the alleged crime scene is in Harris County, and officers from that jurisdiction have now taken over the case.

A police report, quoted by local news site Click 2 Houston, alleges that Towne took the girl to the park, and made her kneel in a wooded area before slitting her throat.

The child did not immediately die, but cried out “I’ve been good” at which point Towne told her daughter to “stop fighting it,” and strangled her for over 30 minutes, police say.

Towne told arresting officers the girl was “evil” and said she “didn’t want to deal with her anymore.”

The child had “what appeared to be a laceration possible ligature marks on her neck,” according to Harris County Sherriff Ed Gonzalez.

Harris County police have visited the scene where Towne told them she had killed the girl but were unable to find any evidence. They have confirmed that the child was not killed inside the vehicle.

Sgt. Ben Beall of the Harris County homicide unitsaid: "The child does have a wound to the neck which is consistent with what the mother said.

"However we believe she was probably killed somewhere other than inside the vehicle.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office arrested Towne on a charge of capital murder and she was booked into the Harris County Jail with a bond of $15m (around £13m)
