Groom shot dead ‘by mistake’ at his wedding as cartel wars rage on in country

A groom who was shot dead just moments after he said his vows at his wedding could have been killed "by mistake."

Marco Antonio, 32, was gunned down in front of his horrified bride as blood splattered across her dress in the city of Carborca, Mexico, on the weekend.

The happy couple had just left the church when the unknown gunman cut their day short on Saturday (October 23).

They were heading to their wedding vehicle at around 5pm when the groom was struck with several bullets.

Petrified guests rushed over to the couple as paramedics made a desperate attempt to save Antonio.

But despite their best efforts, the IT engineer was pronounced dead at the scene.

His sister was also injured by a bullet hitting her back but she was released from hospital the same night, reports El Universal.

The city of Carboca is known for its strong cartel wars however, it is yet to be confirmed whether the shooting was linked to organised crime.

Authorities said Antonio died from a "direct attack" and his identity may have been mistaken.

It has since been reported that another man was shot multiple times at his wedding in a nearby city on the same day.

State governor Alfonso Durazo commented: "This was an attack intended for a single individual. and this means that this will not happen just to anyone."

Caborca is home to the criminal organisation the Caborca Cartel which is believed to be commanded by infamous drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero.

The cartel is in charge of drug trafficking operations and is currently in dispute with the Los Salazar criminal cell, known as the armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Gang violence continues to soar across the country, as at least 12 people were shot dead by a gunman who stormed into a bar just days ago.

The prosecutor's office said: "Investigations indicate that the attack against Marco Antonio was directed towards another individual who was also getting married at the same time in a different nearby city.

"No line of investigation is ruled out and all the necessary Criminal and Field Ballistics expert reports are carried out, in order to fully clarify the facts and find those responsible to do justice."
