High profile sportsman arrested for ‘passing information from a corrupt cop to gangsters’ | The Sun

A HIGH-profile sportsman was arrested on suspicion of passing police intelligence to a criminal gang.

The athlete, who has not been named, and a probationer Garda were held on Monday as part of an anti-corruption probe.

He was quizzed for a number of hours before being released without charge, The Irish Independent reports.

The Irish probationary officer was also released without charge.

Sources say the sportsman, aged in his 40s, was suspected of taking information from the Garda officer for a period of time.

He then allegedly passed the intel on to an organised crime gang.

An insider told the publication: "It is unclear how much information of substance that the probationer would have been able to give to this individual as he was still a probationer and would not have access to particularly sensitive information.

"The individual allegedly looking for and receiving the information has been identified as being closely aligned to an organised crime gang."

The probation officer has been suspended from duty after the alleged offending came to light around seven months ago.

A spokesperson said: "As part of an ongoing investigation by the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit, a male was arrested in the east of the country yesterday (Monday) in relation to an alleged offence under Section 62 of the Garda Síochána Act.
