‘Knifeman’ arrested held Buckingham Palace is detained in psychiatric hospital

A man who was arrested outside Buckingham Palace after allegedly chucking bullets onto the grounds and shouting 'I'll kill the King' has been detained under the Mental Health Act, police today have said.
Quick-acting Metropolitan Police officers detained the 59-year-old at around 7pm on Tuesday, May 2. He allegedly had a knife as well as shotgun cartridges.
The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. The incident wasn't treated as terror-related but Buckingham Palace went into lockdown as the situation unfolded, and as preparations for the King Charles' Coronation are in full swing.
The Met have said today (May 4) that he was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital. He will remain on bail whilst receiving medical care.
Cordons were in place after the man was also found to be in possession of a bag. Specialists attended and a controlled explosion was conducted as a precaution.
No shots were fired during the incident and police say there is no ongoing risk to the public. There were no reported injuries.
King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla were not at the palace at the time, a spokesman confirmed.
A witness told The Sun that the suspect had previously been seen shouting: "I’m going to kill the King."
Another said: "He’s been here the last few nights shouting, ‘I’m going to kill the King!'
"As soon as he placed the bag on the ground the police jumped on him. They were shouting at him, ‘Get down on the floor!’"
