New Yorkers crowded to catch a glimpse of a large fire burning in SoHo Thursday afternoon – a blaze that caused mass road closures and saw a plume of black smoke billow over the city’s skyline at the height of rush hour.

First responders were seen rushing to the fire that officials said broke out on the roof of an apartment building on Wooster and Prince streets as early as 4:30 pm, and remained there into the afternoon as they attempted to quell the flames.

The fire raged for roughly an hour before officials seemingly contained the inferno, with citizens reporting the smoke that had been seen streaming from the roof of the burning building had ceased.

The fire caused a series of road closures in the lower Manhattan neighborhood during the height of a busy afternoon commute, with all eastbound roads on Spring St between W Broadway and Broadway sectioned down just before 5pm.

Despite this, citizens flooded to the scene of the inferno amid the unrest, footage from passersby shows many attempting to catch a glimpse of the fire over officials’ barricade to the cordoned off Wooster Street as it continued to rage.

Officials have yet to reveal what caused the fire to break out. The FDNY has not reported any injuries.

The blaze was labeled a two-alarm fire by officials – a step up from a less pressing one-alarm blaze, with extra trucks called to the scene to help initial first responders.

The inferno also broke out on the same block that crews were filming an episode of law and order – a taping that continued amid the chaos and traffic jams.

Officials said the stricken building, on 105 Wooster Street.

A Fire Marshal remained on scene after 6pm Thursday evening. TV crews, meanwhile, were still rolling, with several fire crews still surrounding the still-closed-off street.
