What they said:

“Labor icon Paul Keating once said to me, ‘Son, leadership is not about doing what is popular … leadership is about doing what is right.’ Essentially, he was telling me that leadership is about doing what matters.”

“It is a disappointing night for all of us. But what we can see is that with a swing of around 4 per cent to us … we will finish with more seats in the parliament in both the lower house and the upper house. We’ve got a lot of work to do, we know that. But we also know that our time in the sun will come again.”

“I’m so proud to be up here to tell you all that the ‘Greenslide’ continues tonight in Victoria. Melbourne is green, Prahran is green, Brunswick is green and now Richmond is green. Our statewide vote means we have also won Southern Metro back. And I am pleased to say that it looks very good in Northcote.”

“I’m reasonably confident, without being overly confident.”

“The community has done heaps of work and I’m really proud. This is a night of celebration for Hawthorn.”

“It’s been a dirty campaign, and I’ve never seen anything like that before. Every time other than doing media appearances I’ve been fighting for the electorate (in Caulfield).”

“We together have knocked on 16,000 doors … We’ve understood the issues here and delivered that back to the community tonight.”

“The [pandemic] was a feature because we’ve lived it for the last three years, but the election was also more than that. It was about the future and about the things we focused on.”
