'Leading Conservative' Liz Truss joins corporate speaking circuit

Now Liz Truss joins the lucrative corporate speaking circuit as she signs up with same agency as Boris Johnson which bills her as a ‘leading global conservative’ after 49 days as PM

  • The move was revealed in a report by the ministerial watchdog Acoba
  • Chartwell bills her as PM in ‘a momentous and tempestuous period’ for Britain

Liz Truss has signed up with a corporate speaking agency that has helped Boris Johnson make millions since leaving Downing Street, it has been revealed.

Truss, whose 49-day premiership makes her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history, is billed as a ‘leading global conservative’ in her listing with Chartwell Speakers.

The move was revealed in a report by the ministerial watchdog Acoba, which cleared her to join.

In its biography of Ms Truss, Chartwell describes her as being PM in ‘a momentous and tempestuous period’ for Britain.

‘After leading the nation in mourning Her Late Majesty, Liz set about implementing her Plan for Growth, including a raft of tax cuts to kick-start economic growth, deregulation and reforms to boost productivity,’ it notes.

‘However, she faced huge resistance from those who wanted to maintain the status quo and reached the conclusion that she could not deliver the mandate on which she had been elected and therefore stepped down.’

She joins Mr Johnson in the company’s stable, along with his father Stanley, his brother Baron Johnson of Marylebone, Lord Frost, who was a minister during his premiership, and Guto Harri, his former director of communications at No10.

In its advice to Ms Truss, Acoba said: ‘The Committee does not consider joining a speaking agency raises any particular concerns under the government’s Business Appointment Rules, provided it is subject to standard conditions which prevent improper use of information and influence.

‘These cases will normally be subject to the standard conditions below after checking with your former department. It is an individual’s responsibility to manage the propriety of the specific pieces of work undertaken.

‘In particular, as the former Prime Minister, you must be careful not to offer any unfair insight as a result of your access to information and potential influence in government.’

The Acoba chairman, Lord Pickles, is also registered as a speaker with Chartwell.

Mr Johnson reported earnings of £3.7million in the first six weeks of this year, accounting for 85 per cent of all income made by MPs on top of their salaries.#

As well as high profile speeches which net him up to £250,000 a time, he has received a £500,000 advance for his memoirs.
