Elvis’s death, her son’s suicide, four failed marriages and a crippling addiction

Lisa Marie Presley’s life was beset with tragedy – from the death of her father Elvis when she was just nine, to the death of her own son in 2020.

She was married four times, including to Michael Jackson and Nicholas Cage, and had recently moved back in with her first husband Danny Keough.

She also battled opioid and cocaine addictions throughout her life.

The 54-year-old was discovered unresponsive by a housekeeper late on Thursday, with sources saying her first husband, Danny Keough, returned to the house they were sharing and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

EMTs were reportedly able to resuscitate her and rush her to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Actress and wife of Tom Hanks Rita Wilson released a heart-wrenching statement on Instagram in the early hours of this morning, saying their ‘hearts are broken’ at the news.

The statement read: ‘Our hearts are broken with the sudden and shocking passing of Lisa Marie Presley tonight. Tom and I had spent some time with the family during the Elvis movie promotional tour.

‘Lisa Marie was so honest and direct, vulnerable, in a state of anticipation about the movie. She spoke so eloquently about her father, what the movie meant to her, that it was a celebration of her dad.

‘She had her gorgeous daughters Finley and Harper with her who made us all laugh. She privately showed us her home, Graceland, and she made it feel like home to us. She was so gracious to us, Austin, Baz, and guests.

‘If you haven’t heard her music please go listen. She had a sultry voice, a power and tenderness, that I have always loved. Our hearts and our prayers go out to Riley, Harper, Finley , Danny @nava_rone and Priscilla.

‘A mother should never have to lose a child. Lisa Marie lost her precious son Benjamin, Priscilla loses her only daughter. It’s too much. Sending love to the family, prayers for peace and strength. Love, Rita and Tom’

Presley was born on February 1, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee – nine months after her parents’ wedding.

When they divorced six years later she lived with her mother in Los Angeles but would frequently travel back to her father’s Graceland mansion.

She was nine when her father died in 1977 aged just 42.

On her 25th birthday in 1993, she inherited the estate which contemporary reports estimated to be worth some 100 million US dollars.

Despite the pressures of being the only child of one of the most celebrated and beloved musicians of all time, she managed to forge a successful career as a singer-songwriter.

Presley explored the pressures of life in the media glare in her own music, and released three albums – To Whom It May Concern (2003), Now What (2005) and Storm & Grace (2012).

On the 30th anniversary of her father’s death in August 2007 she duetted with him by adding her own vocals to his 1969 single In The Ghetto.

Presley was married four times, first to musician Danny Keough, then singer Michael Jackson, Hollywood star Nicolas Cage, and music producer Michael Lockwood.

She had been mostly absent from social media since her eldest son, Benjamin Keough, took his own life in 2020.

Celebrity tributes have been pouring in over the past few hours as the news of Lisa Marie Presley’s death broke around the world.

Stars such as Billy Idol and Leah Remini remembered Lisa Marie with fondness, as well as giving her three children, Riley, Finley and Harper, their condolences.

Lisa Marie’s fourth child Benjamin died in 2020.

Billy Idol wrote: ‘Sad news 2 hear of #LisaMariePresley passing .. she was very loving 2 me, in Memphis in the 90’s she gave me a viewing of the private sections of Graceland which was very special. She was very lovely & we performed together at NYFW early 2000’s. RIP’

Leah Remini added: ‘I’m heartbroken over the passing of Lisa Marie Presley. Lisa did not have an easy life, as some might think. May she be at peace, resting with her son and father now.

‘Her mom Priscilla and her three daughters, Riley, Finley, and Harper, are in my prayers.’
