Man dies in police custody after crashing car through fence in Preston

A man has died while being restrained by police after crashing a car through a fence in Preston on Sunday morning.

Police received reports from the public that a car had crashed through a fence and into a front yard of a property on Murphy Street about 4am.

The man was acting erratically following the car crash, police said, and stepped out of the vehicle to confront officers.

“Officers attempted to restrain the agitated man before he appeared to become unresponsive,” a spokeswoman said.

“Attending officers immediately called for medical assistance and performed CPR on the man, however, he couldn’t be revived.”

Homicide squad detectives will investigate the death. The Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation, which is standard practice when a person dies in police custody.
