A MAN has died after being seriously injured in an assault – seeing police launch a murder investigation and release a CCTV photo of a person of interest.

Cops were called to a coastal North Yorkshire resort town around 9pm yesterday, where they found a man with serious injuries.

The man, in his 50s, was rushed to hospital, where he sadly died.

Police have now launched a murder investigation and are urgently asking anyone who was in the Newborough, Scarborough, area to get in touch.

They have also released an image of a person of interest, but are asking people to check their own CCTV and dashcam footage and come forward with anything relevant.

In a statement, North Yorkshire police said: "Police are urgently appealing for information and witnesses, after a man died following an incident in Scarborough.

"Officers attended a report of an assault on Newborough shortly after 9pm on Saturday 17 September.

"The victim, a man in his 50s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he has since sadly died.

"A murder investigation is underway, and officers are continuing to urge anyone who was in the area around Newborough or Eastborough at about 9pm last night to come forward.

"They are also asking residents and businesses to check if CCTV and dashcam systems have any relevant footage, and contact police straight away if so.
