A vengeful bloke has pleaded not guilty after allegedly sending abusive social media messages to a woman who had his £1 million winning Lottery ticket.

Lewis Powell, 30, of Gloucester, is alleged to have sent the message to the unnamed woman between May 1, 2021 and January 5, 2022.

He is also in hot water for not complying with bail conditions, which should have seen him attending Cheltenham Magistrates Court on September 1.

Powell claimed that He had a “reasonable excuse” for not doing so.

It was not divulged whether or not the £1 million winning ticket was genuine, or whether or not the woman cashed it in – but it was also told in court that the pair did not know each other.

But, prosecutor Paul Kelly said: “The threatening and abusive messages were sent via Facebook to the woman, causing her distress and anxiety on both dates.

“Mr Powell is under the misapprehension that he has had a winning Lottery ticket of £1 million pounds stolen from him.

“He is alleged to have sent the woman numerous messages between May 1, 2021 and January 5, 2022 threatening her health and warned her he would stab her over the perceived theft of the lottery ticket.

“However the woman does not know the defendant, who has been under psychiatric care for a number of years.”

When District Judge Nicholas Wattam told Powell that his case is suitable to be tried in the magistrates' court, he elected to be tried by jury at Gloucester Crown Court instead.

Dermot Clarke, defending, said Mr Powell denies he was responsible for sending the offending messages.

Mr Powell was released on conditional bail to attend Gloucester Crown Court on October 13 for a pre-trial hearing.

He will also stand trial at the magistrates' court for the breach of bail on September 26, 2022.
