A huge fire was seen shooting up a skyscraper right next to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

On Monday morning the 35-story building in Dubai caught alight with flames whipping up the outside of the tower.

The fire was extinguished by dawn having broken out in the early hours of the morning – it is not known if anyone has been hurt in the blaze.

Images of the outside of the building show clear damage from the flames, with black marks visible a long way up.

The building is understood to have been developed by massive property developer Emaar, which was also behind the Burj Khalifa.

It happened in the centre of the city, a part of the United Arab Emirates, with one of the eight towers that make up Boulevard Walk catching alight.

According to newspaper The National, Emaar is a state-backed building developer.

Emaar is not thought to have issued a statement on the fire at the time of writing.

Dubai’s skyscrapers have a history of such events with a number of similar incidents having broken out across town in recent years.

According to the Independent, questions have been raised about the safety credentials of the city’s constructions.

The luxury Swissôtel Al Murooj hotel caught fire in April, also near the Burj Khalifa.

In another event, the 63-floor Address Hotel caught fire on New Year’s Eve in 2015 in the downtown region of the city.
