The weather warning is in force from 8pm on Sunday evening until 4am on Monday morning. It covers the area around south England, west Wales and much of Northern Ireland, where “there is a good chance” of disruption to travel.

The national forecaster said motorists will likely be “affected by spray, standing water, locally gusty winds and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus”.

It added that buildings could sustain “some damage” from “lightning strikes and gusty winds”.

There is potential for “flooding” of homes and businesses, it warned.

The Met Office said “heavy showers and thunderstorms” will cover southwest England on Sunday evening.

They will then “move north across parts of Wales and Northern Ireland, clearing during the early hours of Monday morning”.

It added: “A separate area of thunderstorms is likely to develop across central southern England late evening, moving north into the Midlands overnight.”

Some areas will see rainfall of up to 30mm in less than an hour, the Met Office continued.

It described “frequent lightning, hail and locally gusty winds” as additional hazards in southwest England and Wales.
