  • She alleges she was abused by a resident in the hotel housing fellow refugees

Scotland Yard has launched a rape investigation after a woman claimed she was raped by a man housing refugees in London in 1978.

The woman, who was then aged nine, was part of a group of Chilean refugees staying at the Pembridge Hotel on Pembridge Square, west London.

The accommodation had been organised by the Chile solidarity campaign who were supporting victims of General Augusto Pinochet’s military junta.

According to Scotland Yard, after 1978, the refugees were relocated across the UK.

The woman, who was then aged nine, was part of a group of Chilean refugees staying at the Pembridge Hotel on Pembridge Square, west London

According to a spokesperson: ‘In June 2021, police received a report from a former female resident who was allegedly raped at the venue by a male resident of the hotel when she was nine years old.

‘While details of the suspect are sparse, we do know that his name was ‘Sato’ and that he may have been known by the nickname Cameu or Cauneu.’

The victim also alleges that the same man was responsible for abusing other children at the hotel.

The investigation is being led by Detective Constable Pat Tully of the Met’s Central West Safeguarding Unit.

DC Tully said: ‘I am very keen to hear from anyone who stayed at the hotel in 1978, at the very least to ensure that any victims of sexual offences receive the support they may still need.

‘A long time has passed, but I am convinced that anyone touched by incidents such as this will remember them and I urge those people to get in touch.’

DC Tully said officers wanted to speak to anyone who either worked or stayed at the hotel in 1978, calling the team directly on 07584 593 393 or Tweet @MetCC quoting the reference number 6522481/21.
