MI5 ‘will only consider women and ethnic minorities’ when recruiting new spies

In a bid to improve diversity within the MI5 ranks, the organisation is aiming to hire more women and ethnic minorities to be intelligence officers.

According to The Sun, the Security Service which protects the country from terrorists and foreign spies, wants to fill roles for the £33,000 a year post in its London HQ but "it will only consider women and ethnic minorities."

The publication has seen an ad seeking surveillance officers to protect the country “against threats to national security”.

The ad reportedly reveals: “We are MI5, our mission is to keep the UK safe. MI5 protects our national security from threats such as terrorism and espionage.

“Our operations are hugely varied, which is why increasing the diversity of our people is needed more than ever before. To protect the UK, we need people with different perspectives and backgrounds.

“There’s no one ‘type’ of person we recruit. We are confining registrations of interest to Females and those from an Ethnic Minority background only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce.”

The ad concludes: “You will need to collaborate with the police, MI6, GCHQ, Whitehall, foreign liaison, and a wide range of internal specialists to thwart threats. In short, you’ll have a genuine influence on how we protect the country.”

Last week it was reported that the organisation was also seeking a £45,000-a-year occupational health expert to look after operatives in London.

The role includes “educating our staff on dietary and health matters”.

The job ad revealed: “One day you could be advising on workplace adjustments, the next helping our teams shape the medical requirements for our intelligence collection teams and educating our staff on dietary and health matters.”

The successful applicant will be supported by “medical professionals and professional health bodies”.

And that followed MI5 looking for a new "Q" to provide its agents with the latest gadgets to help keep the country safe, just as the fictional James Bond has his own boffin in MI6 to conjure up weird and wonderful aids to use on his missions.

Advertising the £50,463 a year post, which includes a £2,766 skills allowance, MI5 said the role would be to "gather intelligence and work closely with the police and law enforcement to detect threats and work out ways to stop them".
