Motorcyclist killed after being rammed by hit-and-run driver

Hit-and-run driver, 24, who killed father-of-three when he collided with his motorbike after travelling at 75mph in a 30mph zone is jailed for four-and-a-half years

A speeding BMW driver who was doing 75mph in a 30mph zone when he killed a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run crash has been jailed for four-and-half years.

Kyle Jones, 23, from Solihull, became trapped under Anusan Arumainayagam’s car.

The father-of-three later died in hospital from his injuries.

Arumainayagam, who fled the scene after the smash, was jailed after he admitted a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

The defendant, who had three passengers and had been driving a BMW along Audley Road, Stechford, Birmingham on March 22, 2023, lost control of his vehicle after it hit a parked car.

Mr Jones, from Solihull, was riding a motorcycle in front of him and there was another bike rider behind him, prosecutor Lisa Hancox told Birmingham Crown Court.

A Mercedes had been parked up on the road and the defendant collided with it. The smash caused the BMW he was driving to spin and catch up with Mr Jones, ‘catapulting’ him off his bike.

Miss Hancox said Mr Jones was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital but died from multiple injuries in the early hours of the following morning.

She said Audley Road, which had a 30mph speed limit, had residential properties and shops and it had been calculated the defendant was travelling at 75mph before the collision.

Arumainayagam, 24, of Wolverhampton, who had previously admitted a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, was jailed for four-and-half-years and banned from the roads for six years and three months.

In passing sentence, Judge Dean Kershaw said: ‘Kyle Jones was a loving father-of-three and the eldest of five siblings.

‘He was described as a proud father and was obviously a much-loved member of his family. There was clearly ample lighting on the road and there was nothing wrong with the car.

‘What was wrong was that you pressed the accelerator way too much. You were travelling at 75mph – two-and-a-half times over the speed limit.’

The judge said Arumainayagam had ‘misjudged’ the Mercedes and went on to say the ‘only reason that this death occurred is he was going too fast’.

He also acknowledged that Arumainayagam did not report it to the police when the incident happened and ‘chose to wait’, handing himself in to Perry Barr police station the following day.

Nigel Wilkins, defending, said: ‘He could have reported it sooner but he did report it within 24 hours.’

He asked the judge to take into account his age, immaturity and lack of driving experience.
