Nursery where boy, 1, died posted Facebook ‘rant’ one day before toddler tragedy | The Sun

THE nursery where a boy aged one died posted a Facebook rant just one day before his death.

The tot died at Fairtales Day Nursery in Birmingham on December 9 last year.

Six people were arrested following the horror – and have since been bailed by West Midland police.

Now its been revealed that just a day before the incident, the nursery wrote about the lack of funding for childcare.

The now deleted post reads: "So the government is raising the wages of all staff.

"However, with insurance, food, pensions, electricity, gas to name a few costs rising there is a serious lack of funding from the government to support us and parents.

“The average hourly rate in out area for childcare is around £5.50 per hour. The 'free' hours funded by the government is paid at £4.05 per hour.

"As nurseries the free funding costs us for 15 hours £21.75 per child per week and £43.50 for the 30 hours per child per week. The only people we can get money from is the parents in fees. Yet we are criticised by the same political parties for our charges.

"We must get proper funding to support parents in being able to access affordable, good childcare in this country. Early years education is so important for children in their formative years and being ignored by all political parties is no longer acceptable."

Ofsted have since shut the premises down – after finding serious concerns in the way it was run.

Officials closed its doors on December 14 because they believed “children may be at risk of harm”.

To reopen the nursery must now carry out reforms – including “ensuring sleeping babies are frequently checked to ensure that they are safe”.

The nursery must also “take all reasonable steps to ensure children in your care are not exposed to risks, paying particular attention to risks in the baby room”.

It comes after three women aged 20, 23 and 50 were arrested last month on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

They have since been released on bail while police enquiries continue.

A further three women aged 51, 53 and 37 were held by officers last week.

Two were arrested on suspicion of corporate manslaughter and one on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

Police confirmed the boy's death is being treated as suspicious.

A post-mortem has taken place but further tests will be carried out to establish the boy's cause of death.

West Midlands Police said: "We are treating the death of a one-year-old boy on 9 December at a Dudley nursery as suspicious and an investigation is under way.

"The criminal investigation was launched following a visit by Ofsted after the boy’s death.
