Our neighbourhood reeks of POO from pool of stagnant water on nearby estate – we can't open windows due to stench | The Sun

RESIDENTS have blasted the vile stench of POO coming from a putrid pool of stagnant water on a nearby newbuild estate.

Locals said the "unbearable" stench forces them to keep their windows shut as building work on the sprawling 300-house development continued.

Builder Taylor Wimpey says the smell has now gone from the pond at Church Gresley, Staffordshire.

But Damien Mayhew, 47 – whose home overlooks the sprawling estate – hasn't got over the pong: "The smell has been unbearable. It has just stunk of manure.

"Some people thought they must have gone through a sewage pipe because it smelled so awful.

"It was so overpowering we had to keep all the windows shut.

"We’ve complained to the site manager but they don’t seem to care.

"They said it was because of the heat – that it was just natural.

"But it doesn’t seem natural to me. There is a lot of water considering we are in a dry spell – where’s it all been coming from?"

Taylor Wimpey’s advertising blurb describes Gresley Meadow as being a “contemporary collection” of homes “thoughtfully designed in keeping with the local area”.

But locals have accused the homebuilding giant of not being thoughtful enough.

Kevin Pearn, 55, had spent 25 years living in quiet Silkstone Close enjoying views across the National Forest.

He said: “It’s like a moonscape now, with this giant pool of water on the other side of my garden fence.

“The thing that worries me is that we’re in the middle of a drought and not one duck or bird has had a drop of it.

“So what’s in it?

The smell has been unbearable. It has just stunk of manure.

“If it’s this full now – at the height of summer – what’s it going to be like when it rains?”

A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said: “Construction of the surface water attenuation basin commenced at our development in Church Gresley this week.

"Once complete, the basin will act as a drainage feature, which will also encourage biodiversity across the site.
