An 82-year-old walker has died after falling into the moat of Britain’s second biggest castle.

The pensioner was unresponsive after he was taken out of the water of Caerphilly Castle – which has featured in several episodes of Doctor Who – in Wales.

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 7.50pm in an attempt to save the man’s life on Tuesday, July 4.  

Police have said that the incident is not being treated as suspicious and that the elderly man’s family have been informed.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

The 13th century castle was built by English nobleman Gilbert de Clare and is currently in the middle of a £5 million restoration under the management of Cadw, the Welsh heritage organisation.

Since Doctor Who’s reboot in 2005, the castle has been used in a number of  episodes.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: ‘We received a call reporting a man had been found unresponsive in the Caerphilly Castle moat at around 7.50pm on Tuesday, 4 July.

‘Officers attended, along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service who confirmed the 82-year-old man was dead.

‘The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

‘The death is not being treated as suspicious.’
