Police shut down an illegal bank holiday rave after hundreds of revellers stormed a park over the weekend.

The mayhem erupted on Sunday at Bristol’s Sparke Evans Park when more than 300 ravers swarmed the site for an unlicensed music event. Crowds of party-goers wearing hoodies were pictured dancing around a huge sound system as it blared out drum and bass music.

The so-called ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ rave event was broken up by officers from Avon and Somerset Police at 5.30pm yesterday.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘We estimated more than 300 people were able to access the site prior to police attendance.

‘A police presence remained in the area, with officers successfully preventing more people from entering the site.

‘The music was turned off and the majority of people who were at the site have now left. We will continue to monitor the site.’

The illegal gathering came a day after police were called to the same park amid reports of another music event at the site.

Officers had been scrambled to the site at 6pm on Saturday following reports of anti-social behaviour and loud music. However, officers found there was no one there upon arrival.

‘Officers attended the park and found nobody there. They conducted a tour of the area and found no trace. It was a call with good intent,’ a spokesperson said.

An earlier rave last month saw four people being rushed to hospital after more than 1,000 revellers gathered for an illegal party industrial estate in Bridgend, South Wales.

Officers said more than 70 cars were also at the ‘unlicensed music event’ at Kenfig Industrial Estate on April 8.

South Wales Police said in a statement: ‘At 11:40pm on Saturday 8 April South Wales Police were called to reports of an unlicensed music event, occurring at Kenfig Industrial Estate.’

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Travis said: ‘Initial reports indicated that in excess of 1,000 people and 70 vehicles are in attendance. A number of officers have been deployed. We are urging people to leave the site safely and stay away from the event.

‘The Welsh Ambulance Service has attended in response to calls from the scene. Currently three people have been taken to hospital, none of those persons are seriously injured.’
