Sicko who ploughed truck into crowd and stabbed seven people to death executed

A depraved loner who butchered seven people during a rampage in Tokyo in June 2008 has finally been executed in Japan, authorities say.

The Akhariba Massacre was orchestrated by then 25-year-old Tomohiro Kato, a young man who suffered from a host of mental health issues, some brought about by his oppressive family life.

At midday on June 8, Kato drove a rented five-ton truck into a crowd of people in the centre of the city, killing three people and injuring two.

He then climbed out of his truck and stabbed 12 more people in a frantic rage, killing four more before he was apprehended.

The barbarity of Kato's crime allied with his respectable upbringing shocked Japan's conservative population, however, the warning signs for the troubled young man were obvious.

Whilst at school Kato excelled academically and on the Athletics track, but had a difficult relationship with his overbearing parents who abused him for not studying hard enough.

Following his arrest, Kato's brother claimed that his father would often make Kato eat scraps of food from the floor as punishment for bad grades and had left him outside overnight in the depths of winter on several occasions.

Two years before his massacre, a dispirited Kato attempted suicide by driving his car into a wall but failed.

Finally, on June 5, 2008, Kato snapped.

Convinced he was about to lose his job, he posted a series of sick messages to a Japanese social media site.

He said: "I will kill people in Akihabara if only I had a girlfriend. I would never have become addicted to my mobile phone. Anybody with hope couldn't possibly understand how I feel."

Three days later he would go on to murder seven people, and in 2011 he was sentenced to death after he apologized, stating he "would like to apologize to those who passed away, the injured and their families."

Today (July 26), Kato was finally executed for his crimes via hanging.

In Japan the death penalty is controversial as death row inmates are only given a few hours notice before they are hung, meaning they have no time to file an appeal with their lawyers.
