Tax deadlines 2023: When can you e-file your tax return? When does IRS Free File open?

It’s never too early to start thinking about taxes, especially if you’re eyeing a big refund. That said, it’s a bit too early to file your taxes.

Even though April 15 is typically the day taxes are due, the date for when the Internal Revenue Service will start accepting electronically filed, or e-filed, tax returns varies from year to year.

For instance, last year the agency began accepting individual returns on Jan. 24. But in 2021 the IRS didn’t start accepting e-filed returns until Feb. 12. The start date in 2021 was unusually late because the IRS wanted to ensure it had enough time to implement system changes to accommodate people who were eligible for stimulus checks, the Child Tax Credit and more.

Generally speaking, the IRS tends to begin accepting returns in late January.

When does IRS Free File open?

The IRS hasn’t announced when its Free File system will open.

IRS Free File lets you file your federal taxes at no extra cost either through electronic fillable forms or through IRS partnerships with private tax preparation services.

Depending on your adjusted gross income for 2022, you may be able to qualify for free guided tax preparation services. The IRS has not announced what the AGI thresholds are for the 2022 tax year but last year the threshold was an AGI of $73,000 or less in 2021.

IRS Free File generally opens before the IRS begins accepting and processing returns. For instance, last year it opened on Jan. 14. Be sure to regularly check this page for the latest information on IRS Free File.
