There's a new witcher in town, and he's sharpening his blades as we speak.

On October 29, Henry Cavill shocked The Witcher fans when he announced his departure from the hit Netflix series. The actor, who plays Geralt of Rivia, shared a photo of the show's coin symbols as well as a lengthy message on Instagram that explained he'd be "laying down [his] medallion and [his] sword for season 4."

That's not all. His character won't die with him—Henry announced the "fantastic" Liam Hemsworth as his White Wolf replacement. "As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men," he captioned the post.

The Enola Holmes star added: "Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find."

As the leading protagonist of the series, Henry's departure news definitely hit The Witcher fans hard. Many vocalized their mixed emotions of anger, disappointment and hurt under the post.

"Not gonna lie it would be better to just stop the series … this is really disappointing 💔," one person commented. "Such a shame! Geralt was practically made for you, and you made it your own. Hemsworth is a great actor, but this role and character is made for one person only and that’s you, Mr. [Cavill]!" a different person said. "This is the worst news I’ve ever heard," another added.

It's left many fans confounded by the sudden step away, with some even speculating he's leaving his leading role to focus on his portrayal as Superman. "Whaaatttt??? And Liam?! Don't take me wrong. Great actor, but not a Geralt at all … Is this [because] of [your] Superman role? 😢," someone questioned.

Turns out, it's not too far a leap as Man of Steel star made a mid-credit cameo in DC's Black Adam. Feeding into rumors even more, Henry also posted a cryptic video as the superhero on Instagram and wrote the accompanying caption, "A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded. #Superman." It's a head-scratcher, indeed …

Meanwhile, The Hunger Games star also took to Instagram to share gratitude for his newfound role. As a fan of the show, he wrote that he was “over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.”

What's more, Liam alluded to the show's dedicated fanbase, saying that he's "honored" to take over. "Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character," he said in the caption.

The Last Song star added: "I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world. @henrycavill @witchernetflix."

So, the Continent may look a little different for season 4, but until then, pour yourself a glass of Est Est and hold tight.
