Two people have reportedly been killed while several people have been injured after a shooting attack in Paris, France.

A man, thought to be a 69-year-old retiree, was arrested after the horrific incident, which took place in the 10th arrondissement of the city.

According to Le Parisien, it happened at the Kurdish Cultural Center Ahmet-Kaya.

Paris police have warned that the area should be "avoided" while an investigation takes place.

Local news outlets are claiming that the man, who is of French nationality, worked for a rail company called SNCF as a driver.

Police managed to get the weapon from him during his arrest.

A murder investigation, as well as intentional homicide and aggravated violence, has been been opened, with the Regional Directorate of the Judicial Police taking control of the scene.

No further updates have been given by local police as to the condition of those hurt.

Video footage from the scene shows a huge police cordon, with the fire and ambulance services also in attendance.

One eye witness, who said he was a shopkeeper in the area, told the Agence France-Presse that they heard around "seven or eight" shots fired at the time.

They said: "It was total panic.

    "We locked ourselves inside.”

The street where the attack is said to have taken place contains a Kurdish restaurant as well as the cultural centre.

The Parisian Police tweeted: "#Paris10 rue d'Enghien, police intervention in progress.

    "A person arrested.

"Avoid the area and let the emergency services intervene."
