FRIDA Kahlo is regarded as one of the most revered painters of all time.

Here, we take a look at her life, and what she was outside of art.

Who was Frida Kahlo?

Frida was a Mexican painter and a noted Communist celebrated by many feminists.

She was born in 1907 and was stricken with polio as a child.

Her dreams of becoming a doctor were shattered when she suffered serious injuries in a bus crash on her way back from school.

Frida began painting instead and started off with portraits of herself, her sisters, and school friends.

The painter was famous for filling her art with struggles and pain she had faced – including The Broken Column which showed her naked and split down the middle with a surgical brace on and nails all over her body.

She was famous for her self-portraits and her famous monobrow, which she refused to change because she said she liked her eyebrows and eyes.

Frida died in July 1954 aged 47 from a pulmonary embolism.

Was Frida Kahlo a communist?

The artist joined students at her school who shared similar political and intellectual views.

She was a staunch Communist who sometimes fudged her date of birth to align with the start of the Mexican Revolution.

In 1927, she joined the Mexican Communist Party where she met and later married the celebrated muralist Diego Rivera.

She has become an icon for several minority groups and political movements – such as feminists and the LGBTQ community.

Who was her husband?

In 1928 Kahlo was introduced to Diego Rivera, who was one of Mexico's most successful artists.

The pair had met previously in 1922 at her school, where he was painting a mural.

Rivera told her he was impressed by her art, and told her they showed "an unusual energy of expression, precise delineation of character, and true severity."

He added: "They had a fundamental plastic honesty, and an artistic personality of their own. It was obvious to me that this girl was an authentic artist."

Did Frida Kahlo have any children?

Kahlo was unable to have children due to injuries sustained in a tram crash when she was just 18 on September 17, 1925.

She suffered serious internal injuries in the accident, which saw her have to wear a full body plaster cast.
