Wife of British holidaymaker has no answers over his disappearance

Wife of British holidaymaker, 69, who vanished without a trace on Greek island two years ago is ‘still searching for answers’

  • David was last seen wearing all blue walking gear and had a hat on
  • Heidi Wolstenhulme believes her husband may have ‘gone through the ground’

A British woman whose husband vanished on a Greek island two years ago has shared her devastation over the lack of answers over her husband’s whereabouts.

Heide Wolstenhulme still has no clue what happened to her husband David, 69, after he disappeared while on a walk on the sleepy island of Serifos in June 2021.

‘It’s two years now since Dave disappeared and nobody can find anything at all,’ she told the Sun.

‘I’d love for him to be alive I just can’t imagine that he is because he had nowhere to go.

She likened the experience to a TV drama.

The couple from Skipton, North Yorkshire, who had been married for over 40 years, flew out to Greece from Manchester on June 11 two years ago.

After staying in Athens, the pair visited a number of islands including Ikaria, Mykonos and Paros, before landing in Serifos to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

On June 25, David set off from their accommodation in Livadi to head out on a hike, which according to Mrs Wolstenhulme, wasn’t unusual.

He was wearing a blue rucksack, blue shorts, a blue-coloured walking top and a hat.

According to Mrs Wolstenhulme, David had his his walking equipment, his driving licence and ‘just enough euros for the day.’

However after not hearing from him after 5pm, she became worried and alerted the local authorities.

A massive search operation was launched, with locals helping to scour the island for any sign of the walker.

Despite the presence of specially-trained dogs and drones on the search, nothing has ever been found.

Mr Wolstenhulme’s cards have also not been used since the day he disappeared.

She added that due to Covid restrictions he wasn’t able to travel far and did not have his passport on him.

She expressed her confusion at the situation, given her husband’s experience with walking.

Mrs Wolstenhulme has her own theory about her husband’s disappearance, believing he may have ‘gone through the ground’ due to the presence of ‘old mines in the area’.

During the search operation, David’s phone pinged close to the start of his walk, in Agios Panteleimonas.

She stated to Greek police that her relationship with David had always been a loving one before he vanished.

She has detailed her struggle over her husband’s whereabouts and hit out at the limited updates she’s received since.

The revelation that a mobile signal was found in a nearby village confused her, given the fact that it wasn’t the direction that he was headed.

Mrs Wolstenhulme slammed the police’s soppiness in an interview with Greek TV, claiming the officer was writing details down on post-its notes.

The hotel where the couple were staying’s owner admitted the conditions for the search were ‘very difficult’ due to the searing 40 degree heat.

The couple, who were married in 1980, were avid travellers and counted Greece amongst their favourite destinations.

Mrs Wolstenhulme is adamant that something bad happened to her husband and that he did not disappear off his own accord as they had ferry tickets for the following day.

She also said that David might not have ‘stuck to the paths’, claiming that local authorities have not been wide enough in their search.

David has not been declared dead due to still being considered a missing person.

Alongside Mrs Wolstenhulme’s anguish at her husband’s vanishing, she has not been able to access David’s pension account given there is no death certificate.

She is currently waiting on a court hearing to decide whether she can gain access to the account.

As details on David’s whereabouts remain scant, Mrs Wolstenhulme has called on authorities to search the area where the phone signal was last found.

David’s sister has said that she wishes the family ‘could have some closer’ on his disappearance, deeming it a ‘mystery’.
