Britain’s best curry houses have been crowned in a national awards ceremony celebrating South Asian cuisine.
On Sunday night, the country’s best restaurants, takeaways, chefs, and personalities were unveiled, after being chosen by 700,000 customers.
A Hertfordshire curry house took the grand award of National Champion of Champions, while a chef from Newcastle upon Tyne won National Chef of The Year 2022. And a Manchester eaterie took the title of best takeaway.
Salik Mohammed Munim, Founder of the Asian Restaurant & Takeaway Awards (ARTA), said that each year the bar set by every nominee is raised.
He added that the awards were ‘extremely special’, bringing together chefs and restauranteurs during after ‘an exceptionally difficult and testing time’.
‘The cost of energy crisis is a real threat to the sector, and many are faced with the prospect of closing doors after having served their local communities and patrons for decades,’ he said.
‘This has been a back-to-back assault on the sector, which was recently reeling and recovering from the pandemic, and staffing shortages post-Brexit.’
More than 2,300 eateries were nominated for the awards, which were held at a red-carpet event in London.
Winners were selected by panel of judges comprising of Chand Rahman, Executive Chef and multi-award winning Celebrity Chef; Mohammed Mujibur Rahman, ex-Mayor of Corby; and Graham Taylor, Senior Chef Lecturer, Cambridge Regional College.
Restaurants were awarded based on three key factors: Quality of Food, Quality of Service, and Value for Money, were all considered, as well as Food Hygiene Ratings and reviews from websites such as TripAdvisor and Google.
Restaurants that made it through the first phase were judged and invited to participate in a Cook-Off Competition. The scoring was based on flavour, appearance, texture, hygiene, and aroma.
