Woman killed during tug-of-war game as mile-long rope pings back

A woman was killed in a freak accident during a tug-of-war world record attempt as the mile-long rope pinged back and dragged her into a concrete barrier.

A video shows 5,294 people preparing to take part in the event in Makassar, Indonesia, on December 18.

But the 1,540-metre-long rope recoiled, tripping the victim Masita B. up and dragging her down the tarmac.

She smashed her head into a concrete divider, causing blood to spill onto the road. Her cause of death was given as severe head trauma. It is not known how old she was.

Another video clip, which was taken after the incident, shows Masita lying on the tarmac in a pool of her own blood as others around her scream in terror.
It is not clear what caused the rope to snap, as the tug-of-war had not begun and the rope was not taut.

However, there have been contradicting reports about what happened during the incident.

An organiser of the event told local media: "She was taking a selfie. She was holding on to the rope while taking a selfie. All of a sudden she was pulled."

But this report contradicts CCTV footage of the drama.

Some reports said 13 others were injured, sustaining broken bones, cuts, and abrasions.

Although, other reports said only three others were injured and were taken to hospital.

Organisers said all safety precautions were observed and called Masita's death an accident. They have dismissed accusations of negligence.

Police are currently investigating the incident.
