The Crown risks fresh criticism as Diana actress ‘lays in open coffin’ in ‘obscene’ scene

The Crown will feature “distressing scenes” in its upcoming series as Princess Diana is shown laying in a coffin, according to reports.

The late Princess of Wales, who is played by Elizabeth Debicki, 32, will reportedly be seen in a coffin as a priest gives her her last rites.

The sixth and final series of The Crown is expected to depict the harrowing moment Princess Diana’s car crashed in a tunnel in Paris, France, leaving the late mother-of-two fighting for her life and ultimately, tragically dying.

The emotional scenes could cause outcry from both viewers and the Royal Family.

A source told The Sun: “They actually made Elizabeth climb into a coffin and play dead as Diana. Viewers will see a French priest administering the last rites for Diana as she is pronounced deceased.

“Prince Charles — played by Dominic West — enters the room and is in floods of tears. In his hysteria he notices that Diana is missing an earring. It is all he can focus on as grief envelops him.”

They went on: "Princes William and Harry never saw their mother dead in a coffin and they shouldn’t have to watch this. Nor should the British public.”

The Sun adds that crew were left “very uncomfortable” during the shoot, as they accused Netflix of “chasing ratings”.

The source also labelled the the distressing scenes as "obscene" as they called for them to be "banned from broadcast".

OK! has contacted Netflix for comment.

Elizabeth has previously addressed the criticism of her representation of Diana in The Crown, after the likes of Dame Judi Dench called for a disclaimer to be added to each episode, saying it has begun to verge on “crude sensationalism”.

Trailers for the recent season of Netflix show later featured a disclaimer saying the series is a “fictional dramatisation” and “inspired by real events”.

The 32 year old actress told the Radio Times she respected “people’s points of view” about the show.

Elizabeth said: “It was always very clear to me that one can never know what happens behind closed doors and that a writer is interpreting what may have happened.

“Now the disclaimer is up there, we can maybe stop talking about it and move on.

“If that’s helpful for certain people, so be it, and now the conversation can be returned to the creative endeavour of what the show is.”

She added it was a “tricky” thing to discuss and said she wanted people to watch it and “make up their own minds”.
