Adele Roberts has admitted that she struggled to get out of bed after hearing the news of BBC presenter George Alagiah's death.

George died aged 67 after a long battle with bowel cancer, a disease from which former BBC Radio 1 presenter Adele has also suffered – she got the all-clear last year.

After the news of his death, Adele, 44, took to Twitter to share a tribute to him, as she also posted a statement from the BBC expressing their sadness about his passing.

In her own tribute, Adele said: "So sad to hear about this. Thinking of George’s family, friends and colleagues.

"Reading about George and his journey with bowel cancer helped me & Kate so much. He’s one of the reasons I kept so active during chemo & inspired me to help raise awareness of stomas. Amazing man."

After posting a screenshot of her statement to Instagram, she candidly admitted that she was struggling with hearing that he had died.

Adele wrote: "Not feeling my best today and not really got out of bed…

"I don't feel well and the news about George has really got to me.

"But then I remember it's another reason to get up, try my best and do a massive f*ck you to cancer."

She continued: "Keep looking after yourselves and your loved ones.

"Plus I can't stay in bed all day. My mum would go mad."

A statement from Mary Greenham, George's agent, to the PA news agency said: “I am so terribly sorry to inform you that George Alagiah died peacefully today, surrounded by his family and loved ones. George fought until the bitter end but sadly that battle ended earlier today.

"George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being. My thoughts are with Fran, the boys and his wider family."

George endured a long battle with cancer, which he was first diagnosed with in 2014.

Adele was diagnosed with cancer in October 2021 and went on to have a tumour surgically removed.

In June 2022, she joyfully announced that she was cancer-free.

Her post began: "Angel on Earth. The day I’ve been waiting for. Hearing the words “you’re free of cancer” absolutely took my breath away. I keep replaying it in my mind. It was the most beautiful sound I think I’ve ever heard. Even though I was praying Dr Khan would say that to me I don’t think my head let me believe it until I heard it.

"Everything we’ve been through seems to be swirling around in my body and life feels a bit surreal at the moment… BUT I AM SO GRATEFUL! I am counting my blessings."
