Emmerdale’s Jeff Hordley says he ‘could be next’ to be axed ahead of 50th anniversary

Emmerdale's long-serving actor Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain Dingle, has said that he "could be next" to be axed from the soap, ahead of its 50th anniversary.

The 52 year old is instantly recognisable to even those who haven't avidly watched every episode of the countryside-set programme, as he's played wayward Cain for an impressive 22 years and has been at the centre of some of the show's biggest storylines.

He's currently part of a huge, heart-wrenching storyline concerning his character's mum Faith Dingle battle with cancer that is taking up a big part of the dramatic storylines set to unfold further for the 50th anniversary of the show.

He spoke to Express about it being "upsetting" when a cast member is axed from the show, saying: "I sometimes find that hard to believe but they have got to keep the show moving and they’ve got to freshen up the show.

"But sometimes they do have to say goodbye to people and that is always upsetting. But one day I am sure it will be me, it could be me this year."

It was recently confirmed that Faith, played by Sally Dexter, would be leaving the show this year, and Jeff voiced his sadness at the departure of his on-screen mum.

He said: “My character is involved in the Faith storyline. I'm personally saddened at losing the brilliant Sally Dexter, but it will give us some great stories going forward. I look forward to doing that and that is as much as I know.”

Emmerdale's 50th anniversary celebrations will be happening throughout October, with many of the huge storylines being kept under wraps.

Executive producer Jane Hudson previously teased: "As we start our birthday month, we'll be focusing on our Faith storyline, which is a huge storyline for us at the moment. Then we will work our way into our storm week.

"The Faith story is such an emotional and heartbreaking story. It's going to be huge across our 50th. I think everybody involved in that story is pulling out some of the most amazing performances I've seen in soap for a long time. So that's got a huge part to play."

Hyping up the expectation for October, Jane said: "This is our 50th birthday in October, and we thought instead of just celebrating one day, why don't we celebrate the whole month to mark our 50th.

"And that's exactly what we're going to be doing. So in Emmerdale style, we have got every story imaginable. We've got things that are going to make you laugh, make you cry, make you surprised, and stories that are going to rock your world.

"There is always the potential for a murder in Emmerdale, this is Emmerdale. You know, it's famous for its murders. It's Emmerdale so there's often a murderer lurking around the corner somewhere."
