EXCLUSIVE: ‘I put on loads of weight’: Mark Wright reveals how he turned his fitness life around while working around his chaotic work schedule

Mark Wright has revealed how he sticks to his exercise routine and a healthy diet while travelling around the world for work.

The former TOWIE star, 35, told MailOnline that he turned his fitness life around at 24 after taking a year out of football and gaining weight. 

Mark, who was speaking in collaboration with California Almonds, said he doesn’t use his chaotic schedule as an excuse when it comes to working out.

He said: ‘It wasn’t until I got to 24 and I had a year out of football that I had to think about fitness. I put on loads of weight. Genuinely if you look back at pictures of me when I was 24, you see that my face was big. 

‘So it was then I actually realised I had to learn to keep fit on my own. And that’s when I had to start and I had to learn. So I started working out and made my own diet when I turned 25.

‘I mean, it probably took a year or two to get what I wanted and to understand what works for me and what I enjoy. So I’ve got my routine and it’s just about finding that thing you enjoy. 

Mark, who runs a fitness platform with his brother Josh, revealed: ‘It can be anything walking, swimming, boxing, football, anything, just get that thing you enjoy and just stick at it. Get your diet, get your meal plan, have your nuts on you and then you’re gonna have that energy source when you show low of energy.’

Mark recently landed himself his ‘dream’ role, which he is set to star in alongside his two best friends. 

The reality star will host the new show A Wright Old Adventure alongside his dad Mark senior and younger brother Josh.

Mark has just finished filming the European trip, which saw him visit Croatia, Malta, Italy, Majorca and Portugal – but he never uses travelling as an excuse when it comes to working out.

He said: ‘I travel around so much, and I’m hardly ever in one place at one time. So I don’t make that an excuse, you know, because I just feel like wherever you are, you can work out.

‘Whether that be a hit workout online, which you can find everywhere, or whether it be going for a run or walk, you can always fit an extra workout in, it doesn’t really matter where you are.’

He said: ‘I travel around so much, and I’m hardly ever in one place at one time. So I don’t make that an excuse, you know, because I just feel like wherever you are, you can work out’

Mark is working with California Almonds to highlight the importance of eating well to maintain energy levels and achieve your goals.

He added: ‘Don’t kind of let yourself slip into making excuses. A lot of people blame that on low energy and not having the right diet and stuff. And that’s why this campaign meant a lot to me.

‘California almonds are such a good energy source. And people need to understand that you need it. It’s not just about dieting and the amount of calories you eat. It’s about eating nutritious food, like almonds, to give you that energy boost that you need. Because otherwise you will just sit around feeling low of energy and not in the mood.’

Mark said: ‘When I’m on the road non stop for a month, like for the show I’ve just done with my brother and my dad, it’s tough, but then you can always find nutritious food. 

‘It’s not ideal at times and you’d rather be cooking your own food for sure. But you know, you can always eat when you stop at services. If you are on the road. It’s your choice, whether you go into the fast food joint or you go into somewhere that you can find a healthy alternative.’

Mark admitted that he doesn’t always feel motivated to work out: ‘When I’ve got to go to the gym, I just get up and go. But I mean, I have moments in the day when I’m scrolling through Instagram or Tiktok and I just find myself there thinking it’s three minutes and ends up being 30. So yeah, you can waste a lot of time on social media, that’s for sure.’

A study, commissioned by California Almonds, found the average Brit wastes 10 hours a month procrastinating.

This leaves a quarter feeling low on energy, limiting their ability to achieve their goals – which makes 31% feel guilty.

Mark continued: ‘To me the first year or two of getting into fitness is hard. And that’s the bit that people give up on I feel and they quit because they find it too mentally challenging, trying to change their diet.     

‘I always say this really simple thing. If I’m sat down, and I have to go, I literally go one, two, three and I’ll just jump up and go. Because you’re never going to want to go to the gym. 

‘Like, if you enjoy the gym, there’s something wrong. Yeah. I mean, once you’re there, yes, you enjoy it and the feeling after is sensational. I just feel like a different man.’
