Jonnie Irwin removes himself from family home to stay in hospice amid cancer battle

Jonnie Irwin revealed he has to “remove himself” from his family home and spends time in a hospice as he copes with terminal cancer.

The popular A Place In The Sun presenter, 49, was initially given only six months to live when first diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2020. But he has outlived doctor’s predictions with the help of medication, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

He shared how he recently travelled overseas for treatment but the medical procedure caused irreversible damage to his liver. And Jonnie, who last year announced he did not know how long he had left to live after the cancer spread to his brain, has this week discussed how is yet to tell his three young children about his terminal cancer diagnosis as it would "confuse" them.

Speaking in a new interview, the TV star admitted he has been forced to spend time in a hospice to deal with his pain after the treatment abroad. As the father-of-three has kept his cancer diagnosis from his young children, he said sometimes he has to 'remove himself' from his home and his family when the suffering becomes too much to bear.

"I remove myself on a number of occasions because I'm not good to be around when I'm in pain," he told HELLO!. "I'm like a bear with a sore head and I don't want them to be around that."

Discussing his death, Jonnie added: "It can happen at any time. I’m here to stop it for as long as possible."

The father of three only went public with his illness in November 2022, almost two and a half years after his diagnosis. He has previously told how he kept his condition private for such a long time because he “needed money” and therefore had to keep working while undergoing treatment.

However, once his condition became too obvious to hide, Jonnie confided in his bosses at A Place In The Sun in the middle of a series. Subsequently, his contract was not renewed.

Speaking on the OneChat podcast, he said: “Unfortunately, one of the companies claimed they couldn’t insure me and so they didn’t renew my contract and left a massive hole in my income.

“I felt like I’d been thrown on a scrap heap. They recruited within a week and then I saw someone else doing my job.”

He added: “As soon as you say you’ve got cancer, people just write you off, people just think you are going to cark it."

Jonnie was also recently admitted to hospital, where he told his Instagram followers he was getting "pain management". He shares children Rex, three, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac with his wife Jessica Holmes, who he married in September 2016.
