Jonnie Irwin shares dying wish as presenter plans to go ‘peacefully’ at home

Jonnie Irwin admits he ‘needs to engage a therapist’

Jonnie Irwin revealed he has “removed himself” from his family home to a hospice while dealing with the pain of terminal cancer but has no desire to stay there.

The former A Place In The Sun presenter often finds solace in a hospice when he is dealing with bouts of pain but has since revealed he wants to die “peacefully” at his Newcastle home.

In a new interview, Jonnie expressed his wish to die at his family home rather than in a hospice or a hospital.

He told HELLO!: “I really want to be at home and Jess is fine with that. And apparently, I’ll go peacefully when I do go. I’ll just require more and more sleep.”

The Escape to the Country presenter has been busy renovating the family home to make life as comfortable as possible for his wife Jessica and the couple’s children Rex, three, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac.

The property expert was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in August 2020 and has since shared it has spread to his brain, adding he is unsure how long he has left to live.

Another of Jonnie’s wishes is to ensure their family continue to reside in their home that he has provided and has renovated.

The presenter kept his cancer battle private for the past two years before he publicly announced the news.

Jonnie has not yet told his young children about his diagnosis but wants to spend as much time with them as possible.

He added: “I want to make memories and capture these moments with my family because the reality is, my boys are going to grow up not knowing their dad and that breaks my heart.”

Jonnie and Jessica moved their family from Hertfordshire to Newcastle so they could be nearer to Jessica’s family amid his cancer diagnosis.

The presenter bought the house outright to ensure that his family would not have to pay a mortgage or have to worry about repaying anything to the banks.

He hopes to make it a “cool” and “loving” place for this three boys to grow up with their mum and near their mum’s family.

Jonnie was filming in Italy when he began to suffer blurred vision while driving and was urged by his colleague to seek help with his health.

Tests later confirmed the presenter had developed lung cancer which has now spread to his brain.

He has not told his three young sons about his terminal diagnosis saying it would “confuse” them and so has chosen not to.
