Kate Middleton pays sweet tribute to Princess Diana at Trooping the Colour
Kate Middleton has paid tribute to Princess Diana with her choice of accessories at Trooping the Colour.
The Princess of Wales wore dazzling sapphire earrings that once belonged to her late mother-in-law.
The 41-year-old wowed in a striking green outfit, with a dress designed by Andrew Gn and a matching hat by Philip Treacy.
It is believed that the Princess chose the green outfit to pay homage to her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards.
Kate also accessorised with the Irish Guards Shamrock Brooch which includes a single emerald placed at the centre of the shamrock.
To match the blue jewels and embellishments on her dress, Kate also wore the sapphire drop earrings.
The drop earrings feature two blue sapphires, each of which is encircled by a diamond halo.
Diana was documented wearing the exact earrings on multiple occasions, including to the 1996 Met Gala.
Kate waved to onlookers as she travelled down the Mall in a horse drawn carriage alongside her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Joining the Princess of Wales and her children in the carriage was Queen Camilla, who is colonel of the Grenadier guards.
Kate often choses to wear such tributes to grand events, as she did during the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
During the Jubilee celebrations, Kate was seen wearing a white coat dress which appeared to be a subtle homage to Diana, who wore a similar ensemble while attending to her royal duties in 1991 to watch a parade of military personnel.
Kate also wears Princess Diana's engagement ring, which was given to her by Prince William when they became engaged in 2010.
The ring is identical in style to the sapphire earrings she wore at Trooping the Colour today.
Trooping the Colour is a ceremonial occasion that has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years.
Over 1,500 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together each June to display military precision, horsemanship and fanfare.
Around 8,000 wives, girlfriends and parents of the guardsmen and officers watch the parade from stands.
Today marks the first time since 1989 that all five regiments of Food Guards – the Welsh, Scots, Irish, Coldstream and Grenadier – were on parade together for Trooping.
The display closed with an RAF fly-past, watched by members of the Royal Family from Buckingham Palace balcony.
One of the highlights of the flypast above Buckingham Palace saw 18 Typhoon fighter jets spelling out the King’s monogram “CR” for Charles Rex.
