Margot Robbie channelled Barbiecore vibes in Neighbours wedding – 13 years before hit movie

It's the biggest movie of 2023 so far – the first-ever live-action Barbie movie, which took £223 million at the box office worldwide on its opening weekend.

Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Gerta Gertwig's film follows the couple on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis.

And it's generally been praised by critics, with Empire calling it "painfully funny", and the Independent saying it was "joyous from minute to minute."

But it seems Margot, 33, was into the whole Barbiecore vibe way before the hit movie was even a glimmer in its writer's eye – as the star channelled the look during her character Donna Freedman's wedding on Neighbours, an incredible 13 years ago.

In the popular soap, Donna was marrying Ringo Brown, played by Sam Clark, and the 6000th episode saw the happy day, designed to "recreate the magic" of the 1987 wedding of Scott and Charlene (Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue).

When Donna's car breaks down on the way to her wedding, she is forced to ride in the back of her friend Lucas's truck.

In a promo shot for the big day in Erinsborough, Margot – as Donna – can be seen standing up in the back of the truck, holding on to a huge pink, tulle veil as the truck races through the street.

Her eccentric dress is also in shades of pink, and her blonde tresses are flowing behind her.

The similarities to her Barbie character are striking, but in a recently unearthed interview, the fairytale nature of the Neighbours wedding wasn't lost on Margot either.

"I've done an hour and a half fittings at least once a week," the actress said at the time.

She added: "I look like a cartoon character like Cinderella or something like that."

Margot also referred to the Disney princess Rapunzel, and said the dress was "like a fairytale".

Earlier this month, stars including Margot, Ryan, Molly-Mae Hague and Dua Lipa turned out on the pink carpet for Barbie's European premiere in London's Leicester Square.

Margot looked stunning as she opted for a candy floss-coloured silk corset dress, which featured a long train and flower detailing. As with all her looks on the press tour for the film, her breathtaking outfit was styled after a dress worn by a classic Barbie doll.
