Barcelona’s Love And Hope International Film Festival Sets Opening Film

EXCLUSIVE: The Love and Hope International Film Festival, based in Barcelona and backed by IMDB, Stage 32, FilmFreeway, and Final Draft, will open its upcoming edition with Guillotine by Iranian-American director Ray Izad-Mehr.

The pic, Izad-Mehr’s debut feature, is billed as an examination of the iconic Guillotine killing machine throughout history. From the French Revolution to the fall of Saddam Hussein, Guillotine is an exploration of the dark side of humanity and the consequences of power, the synopsis reads. 

“I am incredibly excited for Guillotine to have its world premiere In Barcelona, one of the most beautiful and artistically progressive cities in the world,” said Izad-Mehr.

Festival Director Darwin Reina and Assistant Director Marisa Martí described Guillotine as a “poignant and timely film that encapsulates the very essence of the Love and Hope International Film Festival.”

“This year’s LHIFF festival is going to be amazing. It’s the first year where we are truly focusing on completely independent films. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to discover incredible stories,” Reina and Martí said. “The inclusion of the film Guillotine elevates our festival, turning it into an incredible platform for exceptionally talented independent filmmakers. We take pride in this achievement.”

Running 15-22, the Love and Hope International Film Festival will also screen Mitesh Patel’s latest feature film, Woman in the Maze, starring Meredith Vancuyk. The Antares Paradox, directed by Luis Tinoco, will also play the fest. The film was an official selection at the Sitges Film Festival earlier this year.

The Love and Hope International Film Festival runs for seven days in Barcelona, with screenings at the Cinema Maldá, Barcelona’s oldest movie theater. The festival ends with the Closing Gala Night Dinner Awards at the city’s Sala Aquarella on September 22, 2023.
