'Clean girl' bun beloved by Bella Hadid can cause permanent HAIR LOSS

Experts reveal how trendy ‘clean girl’ bun beloved by Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber can cause permanent HAIR LOSS

  • The clean girl bun requires the hair to be brushed back tightly and secured
  • The hairstyle can lead to traction alopecia, a type of hair loss
  • The condition is caused by tightly pulled hairstyles such as ponytails and buns
  • Traction alopecia can be reversed if you stop pulling your hair back
  • Without intervention, the hair loss may be permanent

Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, and Kendall Jenner have made the ‘clean girl’ bun one of the hottest hairstyles of the year, but the go-to celebrity look could cause hair loss.

Experts say repeatedly slicking your hair back can lead to traction alopecia, a type of hair loss caused by tightly pulled hairstyles such as ponytails, buns, braids, and dreadlocks.

The clean girl bun requires the hair to be brushed back tightly and secured at the back of the head, but fans may be unaware that the style could be damaging their hair follicles.

Thanks to trendsetting stars such as Hadid, the simple yet elegant look has taken over TikTok, where ‘clean girl bun’ has a whopping 1.5 billion views.

Selena Gomez, Sophie Turner, and Cara Delevingne have also been spotted sporting the hairstyle on the red carpet in recent years.

There are a number of viral videos on how to achieve the look, including influencer Melis Ekrem’s ‘sleek bun tutorial,’ which has been viewed more than three million times.

Traction alopecia can be reversed if you stop pulling your hair back, according to Healthline, but without intervention, the hair loss may be permanent.

An early symptom to look out for is small bumps on the scalp that look like pimples, and progression of the condition leads to missing and broken hairs.

Traction alopecia can also cause redness of the scalp, bumps, soreness or stinging on the scalp, itching, scaling, inflammation of the hair follicles, and pus-filled blisters on the scalp.

The areas along the front and sides of the scalp are most often affected, though hair loss can occur anywhere the hair is being pulled.

Using chemicals or heat on the hair can exacerbate the condition.

Ignoring symptoms and continuing to pull the hair back can lead to the hair follicles becoming so damaged and scarred that they can’t produce new hair.

Those who wear their hair tightly pulled back should watch out for broken hairs, a receding hairline, and patches of hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD)

The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) advises that people should avoid wearing tightly pulled hairstyles every day and try loosening up their updos.

Those who frequently wear their hair pulled back should check monthly for broken hairs around the forehead, a receding hairline, and patches of hair loss.

You should change your hairstyle immediately if you notice pain, stinging, crusts, or tenting — sections of the scalp that are being pulled up like a tent.

The AAD recommends seeing a board-certified dermatologist if you are experiencing hair loss, which can also be hereditary or caused by stress.

WHAT IS TRACTION ALOPECIA?

Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss caused by tightly pulled hairstyles such as ponytails, buns, braids, dreadlocks, and cornrows.

An early symptom is small bumps on the scalp that look like pimples, and the progression of the condition leads to missing and broken hairs.

Other symptoms include:

  • redness of the scalp bumps
  • soreness or stinging of your scalp
  • itching scaling folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles)
  • pus-filled blisters on your scalp

Traction alopecia can be reversed if you stop pulling your hair back, but without intervention, the hair loss may be permanent.

The hair follicles can become so damaged and scarred that they can’t produce new hair.
