What to wear this weekend: FEMAIL picks out a selection of the best mixed-weather jackets

THE MIXED-WEATHER JACKET SOLUTION

The past three days seem to have brought three different seasons.

In fact, the past three hours have had a little July sun, some April showers and autumnal gale force winds.

Definitely not boring but not easy to dress for. I’m sweating one moment, shivering the next and never appropriately dressed.

Then I found the one item which solves all my weather-related sartorial woes: a statement summer jacket.

Print jacket, £110, and black dress, £55, albaray.co.uk; sandals, £250, meandem.com

GO FOR A LIGHT, RELAXED FIT

If the air-con is up too high on a roasting day in the office or an outdoor dinner starts in the sun but ends with an autumnal chill, a statement jacket means I’ve got the situation covered.

And there are so many to choose from. You want something lighter than a puffer, less structured than a blazer and shorter than a trench.

BE BOLD WHEN IT COMES TO COLOUR

Your jacket needs to be exciting enough to dress up those boring blue jeans or jazz up a simple black dress, as I’ve done here.

Or it could contrast with another bright colour. The beauty is that it can make an outfit sing, without being part of it.

You can slip it off and scrunch it up in a bag when the sun comes out without being too precious about it.

Light and pretty is what you’re after. Florals, patchwork, gingham — any print goes.

Think of this as an effortless and often affordable addition to your wardrobe.
