How solo Prince William is embracing his newfound confidence

It’s Willi-yum, the royal fans’ favourite. No wonder the Prince of Wales is growing in confidence – and increasingly willing to carry out royal duties alone…

When Prince William visits New York in the autumn to promote his Earthshot environmental awards, it looks as though he will be doing so on alone, with Kate remaining at home.

Nothing is set in stone and this could change, of course.

But the Prince is judged by royal watchers to be growing into his new more senior role following his father’s accession to the throne.

And he seems increasingly happy to take the strain himself and conduct royal engagements solo.

Although William enjoys the teamwork that comes with public engagements alongside his wife, he will be glad to give her break – the more so as she has her work cut out with a young family.

Solo appearances, particularly when they relate to his personal projects – in this case Earthshot – are also a chance for the new Prince of Wales to establish himself as his role as future king looms larger with every passing day.

So far, the the Prince of Wales is scheduled to attend the second Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit  on his own.

Taking place on September 19, it is where this year’s 15 ‘trailblazing’ finalists will be unveiled.

William is also due to undertake a number of engagements the day before. 

The Princess of Wales is expected to join her husband for the finals in Singapore  in November.

Just last month, William conducted a solo mini-tour of the United Kingdom as part of a new campaign to end homelessness.

Over the course of 48 hours, William undertook a whirlwind of engagements, visiting six cities to promote the Homewards initiative, which he hopes will make ‘rough sleeping, sofa surfing and other forms of temporary accommodation a thing of the past’.

Kate Mansey, royal writer and assistant editor of The Mail on Sunday said:

‘William seems happier in his own skin – he’s really grown into the new role, as Prince of Wales, very quickly. He does seem more confident. It helps that he has the backing of his father.

‘He’ll like the fact that he can now focus on his own projects, things he really wants to do. And he’s perhaps more settled since the family moved to Windsor.’

She suggested that some royal engagements have become less stressful than in the past because video clips of an event can be so easily distributed to the media afterwards – reducing the size of the entourage involved, and the pressure.

One aspect of his increasingly relaxed approach is the humorous side that William is willing to show, particularly when meeting members of the public.

A clip of the 41-year-old recently went viral on TikTok showing the adorable moment a young royal fan didn’t recognise William and confused him for ‘the government’.

After King Charles’ coronation on May 6, the Prince and Princess of Wales, both 41, took part in a walkabout in Windsor the following day.

As he made his way through the crowds of royal fans, the father-of-three was introduced to a young boy who was buzzing with excitement to meet the future King.

Taking it in his stride, Prince William decided to tease the little boy and winked at his parents to get them to go along with the joke.

And just last month, a man told Prince William ‘you’re a tall bugger aren’t you’ during a visit to a cancer centre at the Royal Marsden’s Sutton hospital, to which the royal joked ‘I’m wearing heels’.

It can only help that the Prince of Wales is developing a certain female constituency – regarded as dashing and, of course, in notably good shape. 

Some royal fans were said to have been left swooning after William as he showed off his polo skills in a charity match earlier this month.

Some suggested they’d been left feeling hot under the collar when snaps from the event emerged.

One wrote: ‘The future of the monarchy looks hot, I mean bright!’

A second added: ‘Prince William (Aka his Royal Hotness) looking fit AF during his charity polo match today.’

While another commented: ‘He is super hot, wow! Those arms, legs, abdomen…

‘And we wonder why Catherine always has that huge smile. King energy.’

He is yet, though, to regain quite the fervent following of his early days in the public eye.

During a royal tour of Vancouver, Canada, in March 1998, thousands turned out after waiting hours for a glimpse of Prince William in what was described as a frenzy of ‘Willsmania’.

At the time William was said to be unsettled by the pop-star welcome, however, the prince appears to be a natural in the spotlight nowadays.
