McDonald’s could make changes to lids as it trials new strawless tops

Fast food giant McDonald's is testing strawless lids in an effort to become more environmentally friendly.

The plastic lids have a pullback tab to prevent the beverage from splashing out.

To drink from it, customers have to pull the tab back then slot it into a small opening.

The concept is similar to the lid at Starbucks which has been used for the past three years.

It is believed the strawless lids are being trialled in some US cities as part of a multi-year effort to become more green.

A McDonald's spokesperson said: "These lids help optimise our packaging and eliminate the use of small plastics, just one example of the many solutions we’re reviewing as part of our ongoing global commitment to reduce waste."

According to Restaurant Business Online, the new McDonald's lids were first being tested in Minneapolis.

The report said customers can still request a straw if needed.

For the past few years, the fast food chains have been trying to figure out ways to reduce waste and go green.

In particular, plastic straws can increase ocean pollution and microplastics that can harm marine wildlife.

McDonald's set a goal in 2018 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its offices and restaurants by 36% between 2015 and 2030.

In 2021, the chain switched out some of its plastic Happy Meal toys for 3-D paper-based toys that customers can put together themselves.

Daily Star has contacted McDonald's to see whether this trial is coming to the UK.

Speaking of the fast food chain, the "best McDonald's in the world" has been named.

One of Wales' top chefs – Gareth Ward – said there's one particular UK McDonald's location that's on a 'different level'.

According to him, the McDonald's in Welshpool, Wales, is the best of the best.
