Tips to slow wilting lettuce so your leafy veg can outlast next Prime Minister

Daily Star's 60p Tesco lettuce prevails!

Unlucky for Liz Truss she did not manage to beat the leafy green veg as she announced her resignation today (October 20).

For the last seven days the lettuce stood strong (and even hid under a desk) to outlast the Prime Minister.

While the commotion in Westminster continues, we wonder who will take up the position of power next.

In the meantime, have you ever wondered what it feels like to have your own lettuce defeat a PM?

Well, if you want a taste of victory – fear not- as we have found out how to keep your lettuce fresher for longer.

It seems at Daily Star we are somewhat lettuce experts when it comes to choosing them to rival those in power.

As our lettuce continues to wilt, we discovered that self-proclaimed organising guru Anita Birges is rather fond of the veg too.

She took to TikTok to share how you can stop your lettuce wilting so quickly – and apparently it's a life hack 'every person should know'.

Anita said: "If you want to extend the life of your lettuce and make cutting up a salad a breeze this is the hack you need to know."

Now, you need to get a little hands on with your lettuce.

'Manhandle' it even…

"Slam your lettuce down onto a chopping board and remove the core", Anita advised.

To protect your worktops, you should place a chopping board down ready to bash Prime Minister beating veg.

Once you have disposed of the innards of the lettuce (cruel, we know) you need some trusty tin foil.

"Wrap your lettuce in aluminium foil before putting it in the fridge to keep it fresher for longer and stop it wilting", Anita explained.

Although there is no 'scientific' reason for tin foil to slow the wilting process, it does the trick.

"Aluminium does not, on its own, have any specific synergies with lettuce. If it's protective it's either protecting it from drying out or it has just the right permeability to allow the lettuce to breathe without drying it out (aluminium foil is permeable)," Michael Nestrud, who has a Ph.D. in Food and Sensory Science told All Recipes.

Apparently, the lettuce hack could keep it fresh for at least 30 days.

But, with the way things are going at the moment maybe this hack isn't so necessary after all…

Boris Johnson is currently 'plotting' a shock return.
