Two haircuts women ‘should ‘avoid’ or risk looking old

The right haircut can take years off your face – but the wrong one can be prematurely ageing.

Hair expert Alice Dawkins spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about two haircuts older women should steer clear of if they want to maintain a younger look.

Alice stated: “If you want to age gracefully, one of the first things to consider is how well you care for your skin, body, and hair.

“However, there are certain hairstyles that you should avoid if you want to maintain a youthful appearance.”

The first haircut Alice told women to avoid was the one-length bob, as many older ladies cannot pull it off successfully.

She stated: “Anna Wintour’s iconic bob and bangs may look fabulous on her, but the style is notoriously difficult to pull off and is not flattering for most.

“Blunt and heavy jaw-length cuts with thick bangs and no layers are not very flattering, as they draw attention to the eyes and jawline, which often show the first signs of ageing.

“Plus, the style often looks vintage and dated. Instead, opt for a bob cut suited to your hair type and face shape.”

This doesn’t mean women should ditch their bobs altogether. According to Alice, it’s all about adding the right components to make it work.

She advised: “Ladies with fine hair will benefit from layers, whilst curly hair types can rejuvenate their curls with a bouncy shoulder-length bob.

“Ultimately, layered and textured cuts are most complimentary for older ladies.”

The expert’s next tip was to avoid short pixie cuts – but only in certain circumstances. Just like the bob, the pixie can be a very flattering, youthful chop if cut properly.

She said: “Pixie cuts can wonderfully frame the face and accentuate bone structure, but without the right elements, they can age you.

“Short hair can often lead to a lack of layers, definition, and volume – all the essentials for a youthful haircut.

“By eliminating these features, short hair can emphasise ageing features such as wrinkles.”

Alice’s tip for those who want to try the bold pixie is to “opt for plenty of layering to avoid it looking flat”, and always consult a professional first.

According to Alice, round faces suit a cut with plenty of layers, definition and volume to “boost volume and elongate the face”, while those with square faces suit softer layers and side-swept bangs.

Alice concluded: “Heart-shaped faces suit plenty of texture and layers with long bangs to compliment the cheekbones and, for ladies with oval faces, everything style will look good.”
