All Creatures Great and Small star ‘in bits’ over ‘beautiful’ Mrs Hall storyline

The third run of All Creatures Great and Small saw Mrs Hall (played by Anna Madeley) reunite with her son Edward before he went off to war.

The pair hadn’t been on speaking terms since Mrs Hall had turned her son in for stealing from his employer.

Edward had refused to engage with his mother but started to soften when they met up at a train station before he was deployed.

Speaking about the episode which focused on the mother and son, actress Anna explained the script left her “in bits”.

Anna explained: “I was in pieces. I mean, it’s complicated, there’s me as a person just reading it and my response to it.

“It’s so beautiful and moving and complex and really stunning and me the actor was thrilled.

“I mean, what a privilege to have something like that written for your character. And then slightly daunted that it was so good.

“It was slightly nerve-wracking then to go on set to film it. The build up to actually doing it, I felt quite nervous about that.

“I wanted to do it justice because it was such a good piece of writing and I just think it’s really wonderful to get those layers of Mrs Hall.”

Speaking on the Masterpiece Studio podcast, Anna continued: “It felt very true, very unsentimental and they were really fun scenes to dig into.

“He managed to put in so many layers, that’s why he’s so brilliant and they’re such a great team.

“When Ben Vanstone and Melissa Gallant put together the arc for this series, so much care has gone into that.

“It just means you’ve got so much to play with as an actor, it’s just really wonderful.

“I was both in bits and excited and slightly scared.”

Production on season four of the series recently wrapped with actor Nicholas Ralph sharing a snap of a clapperboard on his Instagram stories.
