Soundproof room ‘found in basement’ of Gilgo Beach murders suspect Rex Heuermann’s home: Cops bring cadaver dogs to search his backyard

• A neighbor claims a cop told them of a soundproof room in Heuermann’s house
• The NYC architect, 59, has been arrested and charged with murdering three women

Police searching the house of the Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann have reportedly discovered a soundproof room in the basement, a neighbor said – as cops have brought cadaver dogs in to search his yard.

Police told a neighbor of the New York architect they believed at least one woman was killed in that room, which was unearthed in what state troopers called a ‘major excavation’.

Robert Musto, 64, one of Heuermann’s longtime neighbors in Massapequa, told the New York Post: ‘He’s got a soundproof room in his basement. What do you think that was for?’

‘This guy is a wacko,’ the retired Long Island Rail Road worker added – claiming he heard about the basement from police, who have been searching the scene since Heuermann was arrested July 13. 

Heuermann was arrested and charged this month in the killings of three of the ‘Gilgo Four,’ a group of women whose bodies were discovered near Gilgo Beach on Long Island in 2010.

He pleaded not guilty to the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello.

Musto said: ‘They’re saying there’s evidence he killed at least one of the girls down there.

‘The cops are going to dig all that out. Said they’re focused on the soundproof room in the basement but they’re going to look at everything.’

Police told the Post on Sunday that ‘cops are looking for evidence if the victims were in the house, nothing yet.’

Aerial footage of the scene revealed groups of investigators in Heuermann’s back yard digging up earth and bagging evidence.

Cadaver dogs also were brought to the property, according to the Post.

Kathy Huber, who lives in the neighborhood said she went to high school with Heuermann, said locals are not bothered by the disruption.

‘We don’t care how long this has to be here,’ Huber, 57, said on Sunday.

‘This is a big community of cops and firemen, and I find it hard to believe that anybody here will be angry that cops are taking their time and doing a good job.’

Dominick Cancellieri, who lived next to Heuermann for 15 years told NewsNation last week that on one occasion he heard Heuermann digging and burning things in his backyard in the early hours of the morning.

‘When I was around 18 or 19-years-old I was watching TV in my basement,’ he told the outlet, ‘I went outside at about one or two in the morning and heard digging in the backyard next door. 

‘Now I really wanted to go and check out what it was and look through the fence but something stopped me from doing it,’ he said.

‘I was nervous I wasn’t too sure what I was doing at the time. But now with everything coming to fruition it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest bit,’ the neighbor said.

Cancellieri also recalled a confrontation over a parking space when Heuermann parked his truck halfway across his driveway.

‘I went out of my car and told him he had to move his car,’ he recalled. ‘He got a little loud, and I got a little loud back and he ended up moving his car.’

‘He would burn his garbage and I would smell it,’ he added. ‘It seemed to be once every few weeks I would smell garbage burning again at his house.’

In addition to his cluttered home, Heuermann kept two storage units in Amityville. They were searched yesterday and today 

Another local who worked in Heuermann’s garden told DailyMail.com how Heuermann once told him he would be fired if he ever attempted to come inside his property.

Troy Weeks, 23, lives a few blocks away from Heuermann in Massapequa Park and mowed the suspect’s lawn weekly or bi-weekly until June 2022.

‘He seemed like he didn’t have any emotions or have a personality. He always had the same expression, a blank stare. He was very monotone when I spoke to him,’ Weeks told DailyMail.com.

‘He [Heuermann] always told me ‘if you are thirsty or need something to drink knock on the back door, never come into the house that is the one rule.

‘He said if you ever try and open my doors then you cannot work for me,’ Weeks continued.

‘I was really surprised by the conditions of his house. One time when I peered in through the back window I saw four heads made out of coconuts with face carvings in them.

‘I thought that was super creepy’ he added, ‘me and my friends called it the shrunken heads house.’

Weeks stopped working for Heuermann in June 2022 after he shortchanged him $5.
